About Samira

San Diego-based Artist, Samira Rostamabadi, calls upon her Persian roots in creating her artwork. Like a mirage in the desert,
giving hints of reality, Samira explores the intricacies of both surreal and abstract art. These works give the
viewer enough information to complete a story or idea in their mind.

Another style Samira has mastered is with her characters—child and doll-like, whimsical in their design. Always facing forward, they
often stare back at us, seeming to observe us from their world as if we were the ones on display. Most of her characters are female,
from every ethnic group and various periods.

Samira has an excellent eye for color. The magic happens in the placement of each color in the scene. It is as if the
paintings were balancing on their centers, and the arrangement of colors prevented them from tipping too far either way.
There is comfort and visual harmony in her work.

Acrylic Paintings

What’s my artistic style?

What’s my artistic style?

Acrylic painting has become one of my favorite mediums because it matches the speed of my imagination. I began my artistic journey working with oil paints, but I found that the long drying time often slowed down my creative process. My ideas develop quickly, and I need a medium that allows me to respond to inspiration immediately.

With acrylics, I can work at the same pace as my thoughts. The paint dries rapidly, allowing me to build layers, make adjustments, and continue developing a piece without interruption. This flexibility gives me the freedom to experiment, refine details, and bring my visions to life in real time. I often combine acrylics with markers and spray paint, creating dynamic surfaces that are rich in color, texture, and energy.

I am particularly drawn to working on large-scale canvases, some reaching up to 20 meters in length. Large paintings challenge me both physically and creatively. They allow me to create powerful characters, bold compositions, and intricate details that invite viewers to fully immerse themselves in the artwork. The scale itself becomes part of the creative experience, giving me the freedom to think bigger and push beyond limitations.

For me, painting large is not only about size—it is about possibility. Every oversized canvas presents a new challenge, and I thrive on challenges. As an artist, I am constantly driven to explore, experiment, and expand the boundaries of my imagination. Acrylic paint, markers, and spray paint provide the perfect tools to transform those ideas into vibrant, expressive works of art.

My work explores a dollish and abstract aesthetic through bold, vibrant color and playful forms. I’m drawn to imagery that feels both sweet and surreal, combining softness with visual energy. My pieces often balance innocence and abstraction, creating work that is colorful, expressive, and slightly whimsical. Through this style, I aim to build a world that feels imaginative, lively, and emotionally engaging.

Photography

Clay creation

As an artist, every sculpture, jewelry piece, painting, and clay creation I make deserves to be documented with the same care and creativity that went into creating it. I prefer to photograph my own work because I understand the vision behind each piece. The angle, lighting, composition, and details I choose are all part of how I want the artwork to be seen and experienced.

Through photography, I often discover new perspectives on my creations. A photograph can reveal details, textures, and dimensions that may not be immediately visible to the eye. It allows me to study my work from different viewpoints and continually improve my artistic process.

Beyond documenting my artwork, photography is also my way of preserving life’s meaningful moments. I am constantly inspired by the world around me and enjoy capturing interesting scenes, fleeting expressions, beautiful objects, and everyday experiences. To me, photography is one of the most powerful ways to record memories and tell visual stories.

I am especially passionate about food photography, particularly when photographing my clay food creations. Combining artistic craftsmanship with professional photography allows me to bring these miniature worlds to life. The careful use of lighting, composition, and detail helps showcase the personality and realism of each piece.

Photography is more than documentation—it is an extension of my creative expression, a tool that helps me see beauty from new angles and share my artistic vision with others.

Sculptures

My sculptures are created using a variety of clays and mixed-media materials, allowing me to bring imagination into tangible form. I am inspired by the objects, characters, fashions, and everyday moments that surround us. From whimsical food creations and picnic scenes to elegant wedding dresses, jewelry, clothing, and expressive faces, I transform ordinary subjects into unique sculptural artworks.

Clay is my favorite artistic medium because of its endless possibilities. It is the material that best connects my imagination to the creative process. Through clay, I can give life to the ideas I see in my mind and turn them into physical forms that others can experience.

I never grow tired of working with clay. Its versatility allows me to create almost anything I can imagine, whether it is a playful character, a fashion-inspired piece, or a detailed miniature scene. I especially enjoy exploring fashion and jewelry through sculpture, using clay to recreate textures, details, and personality in unexpected ways.

For me, clay is more than a material—it is a bridge between thought and creation, a medium through which imagination becomes reality. Every piece I make is a celebration of creativity, curiosity, and the joy of bringing ideas to life.

Art Classes

Art Classes — Be You

Teaching has been one of the most rewarding parts of my life and career. I began teaching at the age of 20, starting with cinema and theater makeup, and later opened my own academy. Over the past 30 years, I have had the privilege of teaching students of all ages, from young children and teenagers to adults. Everyone is welcome in my classroom.

What I love most about teaching is that it is a two-way journey. While I share my knowledge, techniques, and experience with my students, I also learn from them every day. Their creativity, imagination, and unique perspectives constantly inspire me. In many ways, my students teach me as much as I teach them.

My classes are designed to be engaging, colorful, and enjoyable. We work with a wide variety of high-quality materials and explore exciting projects that are both challenging and fun. The atmosphere is relaxed, encouraging, and filled with creativity. Art should be a joyful experience, and I believe learning happens best when people feel free to experiment, explore, and express themselves.

The philosophy behind my teaching is simple: Be You. Every person has unique talents, creativity, and potential waiting to be discovered. Unfortunately, many people do not realize how gifted they truly are. My goal is to help students uncover those hidden abilities, build confidence in their creative voice, and embrace their individuality.

Art is not about being perfect—it is about being authentic. Through my classes, I strive to create a space where students can develop their skills, express their ideas, and discover the artist within themselves. Nothing brings me greater happiness than seeing someone recognize their own potential and create something they never thought possible.

After three decades of teaching, I remain as passionate as ever. Teaching is more than a profession to me—it is a lifelong commitment to creativity, learning, and helping others find the confidence to be themselves.
